Here you will find answers to some frequently asked questions about our pole dancing classes. If you have other pole dance related questions that are not listed here, please contact us and we will be happy to help you!
1. What Should I Wear For A Pole Dance Class?
As it is a fitness class, we want you to feel comfortable during our classes, so we recommend wearing clothing that you can move freely and comfortably in. Form-fitting shorts and a comfortable t-shirt or tank top are good. Leg-warmers or knee pads are also recommended for your comfort. For the warm-up we advise wearing long pants with your shorts underneath, so that you are ready to get on the pole after stretching! Shoes are not necessary as we work barefoot.
2. I have always wanted to try Pole Dancing! Where do I start?
We recommend all first-timers to begin with our ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ 4-week course. This is designed to teach you all of the basic technique, terminology and skills that will help you to progress above and beyond. We recommend 4 weeks as a minimum time-frame to allow yourself to build strength, get to grips with the pole, as well as get to know our staff and instructors so that you can make an informed decision and allow yourself sufficient time to see if pole dancing is for you or not.
3. What is the difference between pole dance and pole fitness?
There is no difference 🙂 Here at the Irish Pole Dance Academy we take a holistic approach towards pole dance instruction as we want you to feel amazing! This means that our classes focus on the dance side of pole as well as the fitness side: we include choreography as standard, as well as awesome pole tricks and exercises. You will learn how to dance and move around the pole, as well as learning floorwork and making smooth transitions between your pole tricks. You will feel like a bad-ass as you flow around the pole and build confidence with your body movement, that will ultimately help you to become stronger, more toned and more flexible, whilst increasing cardiovascular fitness.
4. Do I need upper body strength or do I need to be ‘fit’ in order to take classes?
There are no pre-requisite strength, flexibility or skill levels required in order to take our pole dance classes. Let us help you to build upon whatever strength/flexibility you already have and achieve your goals! For anyone at any fitness level, we always recommend that you consult your physician before starting a new fitness program.
5. Do I need to have a dance/fitness background to take these classes?
Although it is very helpful if you already have a dance/fitness background, it is not necessary as we will teach you all of the fundamentals, good technique and everything else you need to know. You have the freedom to progress and learn at your own pace!
6. How do I sign up?
Please contact us on 083 187 3602 or request a free consultation here and we will be happy to speak to you about your goals and needs, and we will get you started on the best training package for you.
7. I am an ex-gymnast/ballerina/circus dancer, do I still need to take the ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ class?
We recommend that you take our ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ course so that you can learn the fundamental techniques that are specific and unique to the art of pole dance. As an alternative, we can arrange a one to one lesson to assess your skill level, acquaint you with the pole and teach you the basics. You may then have the option to enter a more advanced level class, suited to your ability.
8. I have taken pole dance classes before, do I still need to take the ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ course?
No, ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ is only necessary if you have never taken pole dance classes before, or if it has been a very long time since you last practiced. Please read our class descriptions so you can see what each class entails and decide which is best for your level. If you are not sure, please call or email us and we will be happy to discuss your individual needs!
9. Is there an age limit for participants?
Everyone is welcome to join! There is no maximum age limit for potential pole dance students (Arlene’s mum who is in her 50’s is an avid pole dance addict). It is never “too late” to start. If you are under 18 please skip to the next question!
10. I am under 18 years old, but I really want to do these pole dancing classes!
No problem! If you are under 18, you must get your parent/guardian to come into the studio with you to sign a waiver. If they are unable to come into the studio, then please email or call us so that we can contact them to verify their consent for you to join these classes and we can forward the waiver.
11. Is there anything I should avoid doing before class?
We advise avoiding the use of body lotions, oils, fake tans or oil-based moisturizers within 24 hours of a pole dance class as this will prevent your skin from properly adhering to the pole. Water-based moisturizers are fine.
12. I have a medical/physical condition or injury that I am worried will become aggravated by taking pole dancing classes, what should I do?
Please call us and we can discuss this in strictest confidence! We also recommend that you speak with your doctor/physician to check that this type of exercise is suitable for you and to get a doctor’s note if necessary.
13. Can I wear heels in class?
If you would like to dance in heels, you may do so in our Exotic Dance class. This is a class that focuses on the sexier side of pole dance, creating seamless movement between your tricks and slowing everything down. We love heels! However, we advise that you chose a ‘dancer’ brand of heels (Pleaser, Ellie, Anthonys, etc.) as these are designed for safety and comfort for pole dancers. We will also need you to sign a waiver if you chose to dance in heels, as you will be doing so at your own risk. You can also purchase Pleaser heels at our Dublin studio, we are an authorised Pleaser reseller.
14. I’m not ready for the sexy side of pole dance…
That’s totally cool 🙂 You don’t have to wear stiletto heels or sparkly hot pants in our classes. However, we foster a supportive and empowering environment at the studio, all styles are welcome. Choreography is a part of all of our pole dance classes and we guarantee that you will love it and reap the benefits of learning a structured routine!
15. I’m a guy, I want to take pole dance classes. Can I join?
Great, men are most welcome to join our classes! Please note that our classes include a lot of floorwork and sensual dance, so you may prefer to take some private lessons if you are more interested in the ‘sport’ side of things. Private lessons can be tailored to your needs and level of physical ability.
16. Where can I buy a pole for my home?
We are authorized X-Pole resellers, you can buy your very own dance pole directly from us. Please check the online store or ask in studio! We recommend the 45mm Chrome XPERT X-Pole; this is perfect for home use as it is easy to assemble, doesn’t require drilling or screws into the floor/ceiling, has both static and spinny functions, and has a lovely chrome finish in the comfortable 45mm diameter. Contact us to order your pole today!
17. I love pole dancing and I want to pole dance everyday! How many classes can I take?
You may train just once a week with us, but we advise training at least twice a week for optimal results and progression! We offer a full schedule of classes that will supplement your pole dance training, such as Flexibility, Conditioning for Pole Dance, Exotic Dance, Spinny Pole, Spins on Static and Pole Play (open training). We do also offer unique memberships where you can take unlimited classes with us (these are limited and only available upon application). Contact us or have a chat with your instructor to discuss your needs and we will be happy to help you!
18. Are the instructors at the Irish Pole Dance Academy qualified and insured to teach pole dance?
Yes. We have completed the relevant professional training courses in order to teach pole dance for fitness safely and effectively, such as Xpert Pole Fitness, ElevatED Pole Fitness, Liquid Motion Floorwork and Vertical Dance; you can rest assured that you are in good hands! We are also qualified Sports Specific and Occupational First Aid, with the relevant insurance. You can see our certifications on display at the studio.
19. I want to become a pole dance instructor. Do you offer professional training programs?
Unfortunately, at this moment in time we do not offer professional training programs. We recommend checking out the relevant training courses (eg: Xpert Pole Fitness, ElevatED, etc.). We recommend having a high level of experience with pole dance prior to taking one of these professional training courses. You can take private lessons with us and we will share our skills and high level of expertise with you, which will be very helpful for you on your journey to become a pole dance instructor. Please note that taking part in our classes will not qualify you or give you the necessary skills that are required in order to become a pole dance instructor.
20. I joined an ‘Introduction to Pole Dance’ course and I decided that pole dance isn’t for me. Can I get my money back?
We are a very busy pole dance studio with long waiting lists for first-time beginners wanting to join our pole dance classes. Unfortunately we cannot refund you if you join one of our courses and then decide you don’t want to continue, as we are then left with an empty space that we cannot fill. This would also be unfair to the eager people on our waiting list. You agree to these terms and conditions upon signing up to our classes.
21. Why do you have a 4-hour minimum cancellation window on regular classes?
As above, we are a very busy pole dance studio, if you book a class and then cancel with less than 4 hours advance notice, unfortunately it doesn’t give us enough notice to fill your empty space. This would also be unfair to the eager people on our waiting list. You agree to these terms and conditions upon signing up to our classes.
